This is a portrait of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, one of Denmark's most respected modern composers. At the age of 75, the composer speaks humorously about the ambivalent nature of music as he sees it: A blessing that creates joy in the world, but also a monster that isolates him from his family for long periods of time.

Yet, he says, without music he would not be the man he is today. The composer discusses his early inspirations: Samuel Beckett (to whom he is often compared), Igor Stravinsky and John Cage.

The film contains a  performance by The Kronos Quartet of  Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's most recent work, based on stories and songs by Hans Christian Andersen.
